Drug Addiction Treatment

Battling Drug Addiction in Buffalo

What is a Vaccine?

A vaccine is a biological preparation containing an agent which resembles a disease causing microorganism. It prepares the immune system to recognize the agent as foreign and attack it. This enhances immunity and protects the body against any particular type of disease for which the vaccination is given.

The Cocaine Vaccine

Cocaine addiction has become a severe issue today. The use of cocaine as a recreational drug has escalated in Buffalo . Efforts are being made in order to help addicts end their physical dependency on the drug in order to eliminate withdrawal symptoms. Since the most common effects of cocaine abuse are psychological, it is important to attack cocaine cells in the bloodstream before they reach the brain.

Researchers at the Weill Cornell Medical College were able to successfully run tests on primates for their anti-cocaine vaccine which has brought them another step closer to clinical trials on human subjects. This is a breakthrough in cocaine treatment and may become a sure fire way to eliminate dependency on the drug.

What Does METH Do?

The consumption of meth causes the brain to release about 1200 units of dopamine (brains pleasure chemical). This is 10 times more dopamine than the normal level, along with a rush of adrenaline which makes the user experience a state of euphoria and pleasure, keeping him/her high for about 6 to 24 hours and increasing the breathing, blood pressure and heart beat rate of the user.

How Does It Work?

The vaccine attempts to identify the cocaine resembling molecule as a trespasser and the immune system fights it off. First, the vaccine will stop it from reaching the brain. Next, if the person uses cocaine again after vaccination has been applied, it produces antibodies which kill it in the bloodstream.
